Legend has it that our ancestors, the Hakka people were descendants from the Han dynasty.  Our ancestors migrated from northern China to the south during periods of war and civil unrest.  The Cantonese-speaking inhabitants of the south labelled the migrants "Hakka" and overtime the settlers adopted this term as their own.  The term "Hakka", which we regard as a language and subculture within modern day China and around the world literally means "guest families".

The migratory tendency inherent in the Hakka people borne many to further migrate to regions worldwide, notably Taiwan, Bangladesh, Burma, Indonesia, Mauritius, and India to name a few.  The Hakka people known for their resilience and adaptability, thrived in these nations.

In India specifically, successes were attained by the Hakka people early on in Kolkata (formerly Calcutta) by means of tannery and footwear businesses.  But as time passed on and the Hakka people amalgamated into Indian culture, this Hakka Chinese community of Kolkata infamously created Indian Chinese Cuisine by applying Chinese flavours and cooking techniques with some adjustments to suit the tastes of the local Indian people.  Today, the Chinese community have many thriving and successful Hakka Chinese restaurants all over India.

Now, with more Hakka Chinese migrating from India to Canada, we are proud to infuse Canada with Hakka cuisine as well.  And at HAKKA LEGEND, we aspire to honour our ancestors by bringing “guest families” together to experience authentic Hakka Indian cuisine, culture and most importantly to carry on the Legend...
